REVEAL WORKSHOP: FICTION | FRICTION | FLOW 2 PLAYING WITH PROPS

Monday, February 24th *This workshop meets in conjunction with BBD Open Company Class

5:30-7:00pm

PLAYING WITH PROPS

In this workshop, we will play with practical and poetic uses of objects, space, and selves, skirting the line between functional and fantastic. We will slow down to sense more, and speed up to access our before-thinking impulses. Can we get better at making coincidences happen? Can mistakes, awkwardness, and disruptions be our guides? Can we fully feel brief glimpses of unexpected beauty? Ideas will be layered and we will tune our presence towards togetherness.

“OUT-OF-TOWNERS (RACHAEL LINCOLN AND LESLIE SEITERS) BLOW IN LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR WHEN THEY REMIND YOU OF THINGS THAT WE FORGET ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN OUR DAILY LIVES…” - LAist Performance review, Los Angeles

about the show

Long Playing is inspired by the list of the greatest 150 albums made by women since 1964, compiled by fifty women from across National Public Radio and the public radio system. The list of albums acts as an intervention, a remedy, and a correction of the historical record. Long Playing is an homage to this endeavor and an embodied tribute to the women who made the list and the women who made it onto the list.

Cast & collaborators

CHOREOGRAPHED & PERFORMED by Rachael Lincoln & Leslie Seiters

ABOUT THE artists

With over a decade of creating and performing together, Rachael Lincoln and Leslie Seiters explore the potentials of the duet form, mining the format to reveal the complex intersections of how and who we are in relation to what or whom we meet. Their collaborative work integrates influences from contemporary dance, visual art, literary fiction, and theater, evoking moments when movement becomes language, objects become characters, and everyday logic is suspended. Rather than relying on a known process or style, Lincoln and Seiters continue to meet in a collaborative process that uses their long history on the stage and in the studio together to find new ways of working that are specific to the project at hand. This approach supports the company’s mission to present deeply investigated material, resulting in work with a sense of history, internal logic and integrity.

MUSE by Kinetic Convergence Dance Collective

Six choreographers. Five pieces. One show.

MUSE, the exciting new production from Kinetic Convergence Dance (KCD), dismantles the age-old myth of the artist and muse relationship. Instead, it proposes a new question: when creation hinges on objectification, who is in control... and at what cost?

In a departure from traditional modes of dance creation, six choreographers bring five distinct creative processes to the stage, exposing the contradictions and shared truths that exist among them. Forget about “too many cooks in the kitchen” - this is about the artists. The passion. The volatility. The messiness of creative inspiration itself. In this extravaganza of multiplicities, where contradictions dance alongside irrationality, the lines between love and commodification blur. Muse invites audiences to witness the creative process in its provocative honesty. Who gets to create? Who gets to be created? Who, what, or where are our muses? KCD's new show promises to tackle these questions - and more - in the most entertainingly uncomfortable ways.

Friday, March 7 @ 7:30pm

Saturday, March 8 @ 2:00pm & 7:30pm

Duende Libre Trio Ft. Naomi Moon Siegel

Duende Libre Trio

ft. Naomi Moon Siegel

National Tour

SHOW DATES|TIMES

Saturday, November 9 @ 7:30pm

Duende Libre is an award-winning jazz trio whose original music combines jazz virtuosity with roots rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa into a “strikingly authentic blend.” Each having apprenticed with direct descendants and master musicians of these traditions, they consider themselves disciples of their teachers. The result: A euphoric new jazz that honors its historical roots, pushing open the boundaries of genre to invoke a powerful sonic freedom.

Comprising core members Alex Chadsey (bandleader and keys), Jeff Busch (percussion), and Farko Dosumov (bass), Duende Libre is collectively influenced by the trio’s direct connections with master musicians including Clinton Fearon, Dudley Nesbitt, Dave Hassel, Jesse Bannister, Chucho Valdés, Carlos Santana, Martha Gonzalez, Quetzal Flores, and Joe Santiago.

For this performance, the trio will be joined by award-winning trombonist and composer Naomi Moon Siegel.

Award-winning trombonist and composer Naomi Moon Siegel is a refreshing, expressive voice in modern creative music, changing the way the trombone is seen in music. She has “crafted a truly unique aesthetic, combining elements of straightahead, fusion and modern jazz with world-music flavors in a way that sounds entirely of the 21st century” (JAZZIZ).  A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Siegel has received the Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Hero Award, Montana Art Council’s Artist Innovation Award, Chamber Music America’s Performance Plus Grant, and an Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award for Emerging Artist of the Year. She is a member of Mutual Mentorship for Musicians 4th cohort.

As a composer and bandleader, Siegel has released two albums to critical acclaim, Shoebox View on Break Open Records in 2016, and Live at Earshot on Slow and Steady Records in 2019. She has collaborated with Wayne Horvitz, and has also performed with such luminaries as Jessica Lurie, Carmen Staaf, March Fourth Marching Band, Allison Miller, Julian Priester, Stuart Dempster, Skerik, and Thione Diop. With saxophonist Kate Olson, Siegel formed the folk punk jazz duo Syrinx Effect, which has released 4 albums and performed around the United States.

Both Sides Now

Both Sides Now

SHOW DATES|TIMES

Friday, November 1 @ 7:30pm

Saturday, November 2 @ 7:30pm

“Two singer-songwriters sit on the edge of a cliff . . . “

With these words, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now, a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Created by, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz, the cabaret-style performance travels decades alongside songs such as A Case of You, Hallelujah, Big Yellow Taxi, Suzanne, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60’s and 70’s, and of right now--offering us a story about the messiness of being human, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another, again and again.

Reviews:

Review, DC Theatre Arts (2022)

Review, Broadway World (2023)

About the Artists:

Robbie Schaefer is a singer-songwriter, theatre/film artist and current rabbinical student. The guitarist and songwriter for the indie folk band Eddie From Ohio has also recorded several solo albums, including 2017′s Sounds Like Home: Songs From the Musical, Light Years.

In addition, Robbie is the founder of OneVoice, an international non-profit that unites and empowers youth through music and the creative arts. The organization was active from 2011-2023 and completed projects in Tanzania, Nicaragua, India, Greece, and Israel.

Robbie has shared the stage with Jason Mraz, Sara Bareilles, Josh Groban, Keb ‘ Mo, and Emmylou Harris, among others. His first work for musical theater, Light Years, saw its world premiere at the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in 2018 and is now a feature film entitled Burst The Silence, which is currently on the festival circuit and due for wider release by Rolling Pictures in 2024. His newest work for theatre, The Blue Poppy, is an Irish-Jewish ghost story written in collaboration with Scottish playwright Grace Barnes. Also, he likes olives. A lot.

Danielle Wertz. Described as, "untarnished by the politics of music" (Jazz Music Archives) and "at home alongside more contemporary exponents of improvised singing" (LoudMouth, AU) Danielle Wertz has rapidly gained national acclaim. An award-winning artist on the rise, Danielle's compositions and arrangements weave together elements of modern jazz, folk and the use of her voice as an instrumental texture to create an intimate and personal musical world.

After being named a 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition semi-finalist, Danielle independently released her debut album, Intertwined. This collaboration with pianist Tal Cohen ranked #4 on Capital Bop's list of "Best DC Jazz Albums of 2017" and has continued to receive high praise since its release. That same year Danielle placed 2nd in the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Vocal Competition.

In 2022 Danielle co-created and co-starred in Signature Theatre’s production of Both Sides Now: The Music and Lives of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. DC Theatre Arts called her performance “enchanting and reverent.” In March, 2023 she released her sophomore album, “Other Side” via Outside in Music and self-produced a national release tour including venues such as Blues Alley Jazz in DC, Chris’ Jazz Cafe in Philadelphia and Sam First in Los Angeles.

Kid Lightning

LED from Boise, ID presented as part of the Westside Theater 2024-25 Season

kid lightning

SHOW DATES|TIMES

  • Oct 18 @ 7:30pm

  • Oct 19 @ 2pm & 7:30pm

“KID LIGHTNING, THE NEWEST WORK FROM LED WAS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. A CREATIVE TRIUMPH THAT I HOPE OTHER AUDIENCES GET TO EXPERIENCE. INCREDIBLY BRAVE AND ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.”  -Siolo Thompson, Psychopomp Projects, Seattle

“...AN EXPLOSION OF COLOR, TEXTURE, WILD CHARACTERS, FANTASTIC FLASHY LIGHTING, AND PHENOMENAL DANCING…”   - Jamuna Chiarini, Oregon ArtsWatch, Portland

about the show

Layered with humor, an electrifying score, and dazzling contemporary choreography, Kid Lightning tells the story of a group of talented contestants on a popular game show vying to be crowned the next “Kid Lightning.” These individuals push their limits to claim fame and enter the intoxicating arena of celebrity, only to discover it is more than they bargained for.  Equal parts awe-inspiring spectacle and intimate introspection, it contrasts the candy-coated superficialities of pop music and fame with more complex realities found underneath the surface.

This completely original performance is both timeless and timely: a tale woven through human history but also one that is especially relevant today.  Kid Lightning reimagines what a theatrical experience can look like through a stylized stage design that weaves narrative and a signature blend of dance, music, and film.  Feedback received since the premiere proves that Kid Lightning hits a chord with modern audiences and emphasizes the importance of sharing this piece and its message.  From Colleen Loverde, LED artist and rehearsal director, “This is the first dance show that I’ve been a part of in which the audience reacted & responded immediately, viscerally, openly, honestly, vocally… I truly believe this needs to be seen.”  Ultimately, Kid Lightning tells a story both singular and universal: a reminder of our flawed nature, grace, and shared humanity.  “I loved every minute,” says Jamuna Chiarini/Oregon Arts Watch.
